Pupillage Training- Courses and Materials is an in-depth series of classes and materials, which are matched to the Professional Statement of Competences, and should help pupils develop the competences they need to go on to become a practising barrister. They form part of a bank of a resources that pupil supervisors can give their pupils. With approximately 150 lessons, in a mixture of structured video presentations, text resources and exercises, these courses and materials should help pupils develop the skills they need to be a practising barrister.  The topics covered include:

1. Developing your research and business development skills.
2. Building a trauma informed practice.
3. Critical thinking including being able to identify logical fallacies.
4. Hints and tips regarding key stages of a legal argument plus the importance of ethics to persuasive advocacy.
5. General principles of Ethics, including training for pupils on bullying, harassment and sexual harassment at the Bar, what that might involve, and what they can do if they or someone they know is in that situation. 
6. Witness handling including a large section on cross-examination, which includes loads of historical examples and lessons from history regarding cross examination. Pupils can draft and act out famous cross-examinations, in order to help them develop their skills in this difficult area.
7. The elements of an argument and how to evaluate the arguments of others (argumentation) which includes a course textbook. 
8. Introduction to legal rhetoric or the art of persuasion.

Course Duration

It is anticipated that the pupillage training courses and materials could be used throughout pupillage, so they could be used throughout the pupillage year. The expected duration to work through everything is one year, covering first and second six.

However, pupil supervisors have full discretion in terms of how they use the materials available. A pupil supervisor could decide to allocate most of the resources to pupils, primarily during their first six, which would probably mean that pupils would be spending 3-4 hours per day on these resources, with the rest of the time being given over to Chambers training programme plus court visits. Or they can be used more evenly throughout pupillage or the pupil supervisor can decide to point pupils towards some or all of the resources, at a time that works for the pupil supervisor. It is completely up to the pupil supervisor how they use these resources.

Course Cost

With an expected course duration of one year, courses fees have been set at £1 per pupil per day - in other words £365 + VAT for a year's subscription per pupil!

Pupil supervisors will need to take out the Pupil Supervisor package, plus register their pupils for individual subscriptions, as each pupil will be given an individual certificate once they complete a class. So, if a pupil supervisor was supervising two pupils they would need to take out the Pupil Supervisor package, plus two subscriptions to the Pupillage Training - courses and materials package.
