The Pupil Supervisor Package 

The pupil supervisor package includes:

1.A short course on how to teach effectively, plus

2. A bank of approximately 150 lessons, including videos, a course textbook, articles, exercises, role plays and case studies, which focus on the following topics. These resources are matched to the requirements of the Professional Statement of Competences and are designed to be inclusive, and suitable for pupils with a wide range of disabilities, conditions and needs. The topics covered by the bank of resources, which you are welcome to give your pupils, include:

1. Developing your research and business development skills.
2.  Building a trauma informed practice
3. Critical thinking including being able to identify logical fallacies.
4. Hints and tips regarding key stages of a legal argument plus the importance of        ethics to persuasive advocacy.
5. General principles of Ethics, including training for pupils on bullying,            harassment  and sexual harassment at the Bar, what that might involve, and what they can do if they or someone they know is in that situation. (as per recommendation 11 of the Harman Review)
6. Witness handling including a large section on cross-examination, which includes loads of historical examples and lessons from history regarding cross examination.  
7. The elements of an argument and how to evaluate the arguments of others (argumentation) which includes a course textbook.
8. Introduction to classical legal rhetoric or the art of persuasion.

The short teaching course is aimed at Pupil Supervisors , and provides an introduction to the core aspects of teaching, including how to best manage the needs of their pupils during pupillage. The materials are available for a year on demand once you buy the subscription.

This course aims to teach you how to become a good teacher. Teaching can be fantastically rewarding but it can be quite intimidating when you are just starting out, so the aim of the course is to try and get you in good habits from the start.

As part of this course subscription, supervisors also have full access to all the course content available to registered pupils in order to supervise their activities and direct them to the lessons they wish them to focus on.

The aim was to create a bank of resources that pupil supervisors could fall back on if they got called away unexpectedly and needed to give their pupils work to get on with in the meantime, or if they wanted their pupils to cover some or all of the materials contained on the site. There are approximately 150 lessons available that you can allocate, use and direct your pupils towards, so you should never be in a position where you have nothing to give your pupils.

All videos have full transcripts available in accessible 'dyslexia friendly' formats (brown text on a yellow background), as well as transcripts written in black text on a white background that are suitable for general use, particularly relevant for pupils with autism and also readable by screen readers. Tagged PDF versions for text readers for the visually impaired are also available.

Available 24/7: pupils can work their way through the resources at their own pace or as directed by chambers and will receive certificates to confirm their completion of each topic or class. 

Course Duration

It is anticipated that the pupillage training courses and materials could be used throughout pupillage, so they could be used throughout the pupillage year. The expected duration to work through everything is one year, covering first and second six.

However, pupil supervisors have full discretion in terms of how they use the materials available. A pupil supervisor could decide to allocate most of the resources to pupils, primarily during their first six, which would probably mean that pupils would be spending 3-4 hours per day on these resources, with the rest of the time being given over to Chambers training programme plus court visits. Or they can be used more evenly throughout pupillage or the pupil supervisor can decide to point pupils towards some or all of the resources, at a time that works for the pupil supervisor. It is completely up to the pupil supervisor how they use these resources.

These resources should benefit your pupils, but they are also there to help and support pupil supervisors who may be new to teaching and who may have limited access to other teaching aids, courses and materials. These courses and materials are teaching aids that have been created to help pupil supervisors effectively support their pupils, whilst they are getting to grips with teaching.

So, for a £1 a day for each pupil supervisor, pupil supervisors can learn how to become a good teacher and will also have access to a large bank of resources that they can give their pupils during pupillage, that should help their pupils meet the Professional Statement of Competences.
